Norfolk, Virginia

What more can be said for the military servicemen and women that have not already been said?

For ten years we have had the honor of supporting our son in the United States Navy. It has been painstakingly hard and even sad at times, but nothing fills a parent’s heart more than seeing their child be a part of something bigger than them and supplies their country with such a gift of freedom.

Norfolk Virginia has created an area that’s supporting our fine Navy men and women in more ways than just a port. This area gave such an air of openness and a sense of life that catered to the residents and visitors alike. There was not a place where you could not sit and find yourself dreaming of seeing more. The food, art, history, and hotels have so much to offer. You can get just about anything you can dream of while on a weekend or an extended vacation.

You have to take the time and dive into the places we visited and consider a trip to explore on your own.

Places we visited:

Glass Light Hotel & Gallery: Have you ever heard the saying, “Location, location, location!” Well, this place had IT all! Centrally located in the downtown Norfolk Historic District, this beauty has you within minutes of everything you need to fill your day with food fun, and adventure. The rooms were top notch and the staff was super friendly.

Hampton Roads Naval Museum: Take your time when visiting this one. Such an impressive place to visit with an abundance of things to see. Tickets were reasonable and the facility had something for everyone.

Granby Street Pizza: This place has a FULL menu. If you can’t find something to please your palate here then you are not a foodie. The servings are huge and the ingredients are fresh.

The VIP Lounge Barbershop and Spa: Shave and a haircut, ten cents! Not really but you definitely get your money’s worth. Walk in on Wednesdays and you can get a $10 haircut. That’s pretty close… These fine folks create art with hair and beards. I watched as men were transformed from burley to GQ! Tell Des the Barfly says hello!

Waterside District: Food, food, and more food topped with some super cold beer on tap! How in the world did we not find this place sooner? No matter which seat in the house you choose, you’ll be able to take in breathtaking views of the port, yachts, sailboats, and the beautifully landscaped Navel base just across the water in Portsmouth.
